Fastest production snowmobile

Yeah, winter can be a drag. We gauge the temperature by how fast snot turns from goo to solid ice even though it's still in our nostrils. Months spent hibernating indoors watching SCTV reruns, only emerging periodically to shovel snow, will wear a person down.

But anyone who thinks winter sucks probably doesn't own a snowmobile. Over the past decade, these tracked machines have gone from mere high-performance sleds to absolutely bonkers powder-slewing slingshots. You'd probably need the skills of Gilles Villeneuve, we thought, before their manufacturers would loan you one.

Here's how the conversation went:. Only one person on staff has any idea what he's doing. Even at rest, it looks ready to devour more powder than Al Pacino in Scarface. Less knowledgeable staffers' jaws dropped when they learned the turbocharged inline-three, tucked into a sled that weighs just pounds, produces horsepower at a GT3—like rpm. Our next two specimens hail from Canada's Ski-Doo brand. With both port and direct fuel injection—just like the Corvette ZR1!

To put the Yamaha hypersled in context, Ski-Doo provided a second Renegade powered by a turbocharged inline-three. The company's first boosted four-stroke offering in the snowmobile world, this cc triple is good for horsepower. The Renegade X-RS comes bearing a detuned race chassis wrapped in bodywork that looks as if it had been plucked off a factory race hauler. With the trailer loaded, we headed north to the 45th parallel, which dissects Gaylord, Michigan, to pick up our fourth and last snowmobile.

The black and lime-green Polaris Rush Pro-S has a very different look from the rest of the machines. It's shorter and narrower than the three others, with bizarro rear-suspension geometry and a stubbier track. It, too, is powered by a two-stroke inline-two, this one using only port injection to produce its horsepower.

We tried to include an Arctic Cat in our lineup, but in the days leading up to our adventure, the phone line went silent. Our initial plan was to embark on a backpack journey from the 45th, ride north to the Mackinac Bridge, pay the toll to be trailered across the Mighty Mac, and continue across the Upper Peninsula a.

Michigan's weather, however, is more finicky than our long-term Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio—which is doing fine at the moment, thanks for asking. Days before our ride, heavy rains decimated the snowpack of the northern Lower Peninsula. So we joined the largest migration of pickup trucks in the U.

Like the copper prospectors who flocked to the U. Not only are the Great Lakes one of the largest sources of fresh water on the planet, in the winter months, they are also massive snow generators.

As cold air passes over these warm bodies of water, it scoops up moisture that then freezes in the atmosphere and blankets the shorelines and neighboring communities in fluffy powder. Here, snow isn't measured with a ruler but a yardstick. But which direction to go? In terms of size, Michigan's mile trail system ranks sixth in the nation, after those of New Hampshire, New York, Maine, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, the latter two boasting more than 20, miles each.

Snaking through state and federal lands, with leased portions traversing private tracts, the trail system is funded entirely by its users. Trails throughout the state are managed by 68 grooming clubs whose members spend their nights out on them, driving tractors dragging specially designed sleds that smooth and condition the snowpack. Groomer operators are mostly volunteers, and their shifts last anywhere from eight to 14 hours. Most clubs groom six days a week.

Imagine waking up every morning to find the roads along your commute have been freshly repaved. These operators are the heroes of the snowmobiling world. We start our trek heading southwest, twisting and turning through this arctic Nordschleife.

The entire trail system is essentially one giant race circuit, linked together like a vast neurological network with two-way traffic.Forum Rules. Remember Me? You are currently viewing our boards as a guest which gives you limited access to view most discussions and access our other features.

2018 Real World Shootout

By Mark Boncher March 21, Groomed, great, goodness! Every year we break-in our demo sleds per manufacturer specs. We use only OEM preferred lubricants, and adhere to their individual break-in standards. This includes but is not limited to such things as correct timing for oil changes for 4-stroke machines, following RPM and fuel guidelines, and watching countdown timers on units like the Ski-Doo E-Tec sleds.

Each sled is well beyond their break-in period when we run them for both initial MPG testing and for acceleration testing. In addition, we test each sled in a manner we feel a normal consumer would set them up. Therefore, we often put on slightly larger windshields on certain trail sleds, traction and carbides on many cc and larger sleds, storage bags, etc.

We want to see how the average person would feel riding his or her own sled. There are no performance modifications made and other than small accessories like those mentioned, these are bone stock machines. This year during the Real World Shootout week we had bitterly cold conditions. The thermometer hardly broke single digits for a high and lows were far below zero. We had snow every night for the entire week and there was several feet of snow on the ground. On the acceleration test day we had mph tail-winds and overcast skies with spotty snow-showers and a high of 8 degrees.

Needless to say it was a crisp, but nearly perfect morning for snowmobile testing! Like every year, we bring a cadre of test riders that run the gambit from young folks to old folks and includes both men and women.

A big part of the Real World Shootout is acquiring data through various standardized tests, but it is also to get a seat-of-the-pants discussion from each of our test riders after each day of riding.

These opinions help form many topics that are touched on in articles such as our Long-Term Test reviews. We have ex-racers, touring riders, western riders and average trail riders in our group so experiences and opinions vary widely.

After decades of consecutive years compiling data we have a large base of information that allows us to compare and draw more conclusions from than any other snowmobile media. We had a nice mix of sleds this year for our demo fleet, which did not disappoint.

While we still love to ride cc and lower horsepower sleds, many of the new machines which we need to evaluate were of the larger engine nature again this year. Lugs on these sleds were 1. Also, we did not have time to stud the Cat, but the other two were lightly studded with two studs per bar, down the center of the track. Both are deemed close to off-trail and on-trail sleds, but in reality the Yamaha is still much more suited to on-trail riding.

The outlier in the acceleration testing was the Polaris Titan. But like everything else, we put it through the paces.Discussion in ' General Yamaha Discussion ' started by dylanjen9Jan 3, Log in or Sign up.

Messages: Location: Florence WI. What does everyone think are the fastest stock sleds ever made? I would think the apex has to be pretty high on the list. Messages: Location: elma, new york. Thundercat Mach z Mach z Apex Srx Xcr Are a few that I can think of off the top of my head that are triple digit runners out of the crate. Messages: 1, Location: south elgin, il. I think the SRX held the record for awhile.

Even if they have got the engine, they are too high with too steep track to ground attack angle. AlataloJan 4, I saw this same thread on another site also, and as one guy on there said " are we talking quickest or fastest top end" quickest srxfastest at the end 98 thunder cat. This is stock or just clutched only. If mod'ed, today's sleds can't be touched by the old ones.

The gains you could get out of a well tuned, piped, ported, clutched, older thunder cat, srx, Mach z, or vmax4 though was truly amazing.

To think we have to boost to catch some of these. Messages: Location: North ND. I heard? Before not sure? Messages: 2, Location: Ontario. I still have my srx poster in the garage stating quickest ever out of the box.

I'm pretty sure it's this one Fastest sled. Blue DaveJan 4, Messages: Location: Stouffville, Ontario. In a straight line the vmax-4 and thundercat were fast. Get on a trail and neither one will touch an srx or mach-z.

XCR and 's were quick too.
